The world’s second biggest diamond Lesedi La Rona, a 1,109 carat stone unearthed by Canada’s Lucara Diamond Corp, has been sold for $53 million (₹346 crore) to luxury jeweller Graff Diamonds on Monday, 25th September, 2017. This huge diamond was mined at Lucara’s Karowe mine in Botswana in November 2015 and is said to be 2.5-3 billion years old. It was named Lesedi La Rona which means ‘our light’ in Botswana’s national language Tswana.
This diamond is significantly bigger than the 813-carat Constellation stone Lucara, which was found at the same time. However, even after being comparatively smaller in size, the Lucara stone was sold for a higher price. It was sold for a record $63 million, which amounts to be $77,500 a carat.
With the recent sale of Lesedi La Rona, it is expected that the company’s financial position will improve, as shared by BMO analyst Edward Sterck. Post this sale, Lucara rose to 7.4% in Toronto, which accounts to be a big gain since September 2016. But the shares of the company have declined by 19% this year.
Lucara’s Chief Executive Officer, William Lamb says that the buyer of the stone has taken a huge risk by investing a lot of money in the stone. This is why it was extremely difficult for us to find a buyer for the 1,109 carat Lesedi La Rona stone, the world’s second biggest diamond.
Lesedi La Rona stone is only a bit smaller than a usual tennis ball in size. It is only the second one in size to a diamond that was found in South Africa.
