The popularity of birthstones dates back to ancient times when people living in the early civilisations believed that these gemstones bring luck, health and prosperity. Each month is associated with a gemstone having a unique meaning and significance. Those born in that month wear these gemstones (birthstones) to seek good luck, health and prosperity. A few months have multiple birthstones too, just like November.
The individuals born in chilly month of November get to choose between two sunny gemstones – topaz and citrine. Both of these November birthstones are known for their calming energies, bringing warmth and fortune to those who wear them. The two gemstones are fairly abundant and thus, affordable. Even in larger sizes the two would fit in your budget quite easily.
Topaz and citrine look so similar that they are often mistaken for each other but the fact is that topaz is available in a wide spectrum of colours (not just the yellow one).
Topaz
During historic times, all yellow gems were mistaken for topaz but topaz is actually available in a variety of colours. Pure topaz is colourless but the most desired form of topaz is Imperial topaz (vibrant orange hue with slight pinkish tones). However, it can be found in a variety of rich colours like blue, pink and yellow. Brazil is the largest producer of topaz stones.
Citrine
Citrine is available in shades ranging from pale yellow to brownish orange in colour. Its pale yellow colour is the reason why people confuse it for topaz. The yellow hues of citrine are caused due to presence of iron in quartz crystals. Brazil is the largest supplier of this November birthstone too. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including very large sizes, citrine can easily be utilised as that big, bold, statement piece in women jewellery and also in cufflinks and rings for men.
